A keystone species of Florida's upland ecosystems. Digs deep burrows (up to 40 feet long, 10 feet deep) that provide shelter for over 350 other species including indigo snakes, burrowing owls, and mice.

Behavior

Digs extensive burrows in sandy soils. Most active in morning and late afternoon. Males fight for territory by ramming shells. Shares burrows with commensals (other species).
