Bluefish
Pomatomus saltatrix
Least Concern
Razor-toothed and relentlessly aggressive, bluefish are the piranha of Florida's coastal waters. They slash through baitfish schools in feeding frenzies, cutting fish in half and leaving the water churning. One of the most exciting species to catch on light tackle — if your line survives their teeth.
Behavior
Voracious pack hunter that attacks bait schools in a frenzy, often killing more than they can eat. Migratory species — moves south to Florida in fall/winter. Incredible fighters pound-for-pound with fast runs and violent head-shaking.
⚠️ Safety
Extremely sharp teeth can cause severe lacerations — never lip a bluefish. Use pliers and keep fingers far from the mouth. They can bite through monofilament leader easily.
