Bonefish
Albula vulpes
Near Threatened
The 'gray ghost' of the flats — bonefish are mirror-bright speedsters that vanish into ankle-deep water. One of the three species in the legendary Florida Keys Grand Slam. Sight-fishing for bonefish on crystal-clear flats is the ultimate shallow-water angling experience.
Behavior
Feeds on shallow flats during incoming tides, rooting through marl and sand for crustaceans. Forked tail waves above the surface when tailing. Explosive first run when hooked — often peeling 100+ yards of line in seconds. Schools in groups of 3–20 on the flats.
⚠️ Safety
Handle gently — bonefish are fragile. Keep in the water during release, support the belly, and point into the current until they swim off strongly.
