A living dinosaur. Gulf sturgeon are ancient fish virtually unchanged for 200 million years, with bony scutes instead of scales and a shark-like tail. Florida's Suwannee River supports the healthiest remaining population. Strictly catch-and-release — they're federally protected.
Behavior
Anadromous — enters rivers in spring, fasts completely for 6–8 months in freshwater, then returns to the Gulf to feed in winter. Known for dramatic leaping behavior — launching their full body out of the water repeatedly. Can live 60+ years.
⚠️ Safety
Jumping sturgeon are a genuine safety hazard on the Suwannee River — they have injured boaters. Federally threatened — any harassment or catch is illegal without a research permit.
