Striped Mullet
Mugil cephalus
Least Concern
The backbone of Florida's coastal ecosystem and one of its most culturally significant fish. Mullet are both the premier live and cut bait for inshore fishing AND a beloved food fish — smoked mullet is a quintessential Old Florida tradition. Their spectacular jumping behavior makes them one of the most visible fish on any waterway.
Behavior
Schooling herbivore that feeds by sucking up bottom sediment and filtering out algae and detritus. Famous for leaping clear of the water repeatedly — a behavior still not fully understood by scientists. Massive spawning runs occur offshore in fall.
⚠️ Safety
No significant safety concerns. Cast net use requires skill — practice in open areas away from other anglers.
