Nurse Shark

A slow-moving, bottom-dwelling shark commonly found resting under ledges and in caves on Florida's reefs. Docile by nature but capable of a powerful bite if harassed. The most commonly encountered shark by Florida divers and snorkelers.
Behavior
Nocturnal feeder. Rests in groups during the day, often piled on top of each other. Uses suction feeding โ inhales prey off the bottom. Sluggish and rarely aggressive unless provoked.
โ ๏ธ Safety
Never touch, grab, or stand on a resting nurse shark. Their bite is extremely powerful with a crushing grip. Look before kneeling on the bottom while diving.
Fun Facts
- One of few shark species that can rest motionless on the bottom
- Can grow up to 14 feet long
- Barbels near the mouth act as sensory organs to find prey
- Despite docile reputation, responsible for many Florida shark bites โ almost all from people grabbing or stepping on them
