Pinfish

Lagodon rhomboides

Least Concern
Pinfish

The most abundant small fish on Florida's seagrass flats and one of the toughest live baits available. Pinfish earn their name from the sharp dorsal spines that prick unwary anglers. While often considered a pest bait-stealer, a large pinfish on a hook is deadly bait for grouper, snook, and redfish.

Size small
Habitat saltwater, brackish
Diet Seagrass, algae, small invertebrates, detritus โ€” omnivorous
Colors green, yellow, silver

Behavior

Ubiquitous on seagrass flats and around docks. Extremely hardy live bait โ€” survives in a bait bucket far longer than pilchards. Can be caught easily with small hooks and bread or shrimp bits. Territorial around structure.

โš ๏ธ Safety

Sharp dorsal spines โ€” the fish's namesake โ€” will puncture fingers. Grip carefully behind the head with spines folded down.
