Sand Flea
Emerita talpoida
Not Evaluated
Not actually a flea or even a fish — sand fleas are small mole crabs that live in the surf zone and are the undisputed #1 bait for Florida pompano fishing. Digging sand fleas from the wet sand at the waterline is a time-honored beach tradition and the essential first step of any serious surf fishing trip.
Behavior
Burrows rapidly into wet sand in the swash zone. Extends V-shaped antennae into receding wave wash to filter plankton. Migrates up and down the beach with the tides. Populations peak in warmer months. Females carry visible orange egg clusters.
⚠️ Safety
Harmless — they do not bite. Sand fleas are caught by hand or with a sand flea rake in the surf zone.
