Wahoo

Acanthocybium solandri

Least Concern
Wahoo

One of the ocean's fastest predators, wahoo are torpedo-shaped pelagics that strike trolled baits at over 40 mph. Their iridescent blue tiger stripes and razor-sharp teeth make them unmistakable. The flesh is premium-grade — mild, white, and often compared to swordfish.

Size large
Habitat saltwater
Diet Squid, flying fish, ballyhoo, other fast-moving pelagics
Colors blue, silver, black

Behavior

Solitary or in small groups. Cruises the edges of the Gulf Stream and deep blue water. Strikes at extreme speed — often the first indication is a screaming reel. High-speed trolling with rigged baits or lures is the primary technique.

⚠️ Safety

Extremely dangerous teeth — use long pliers and a wire leader. Never hand-gaff near the head. Can thrash violently on deck causing severe cuts.
